The reviews on R. Kelly’s concert in Uganda’s Lugogo Cricket Ground on Friday night are grim. Most media outlets termed the RnB star’s performance as “too short”. The 'I Believe I Can Fly' hit-maker performed for almost an hour and brought his act to a halt at exactly 11:20pm.The mammoth crowd that had sung along to R Kelly’s popular hits like 'Happy People' and 'I Wish' were left gazing at the stage hoping for more after the 72 minute-performance was done.
A fan who was at the concert said, “R. Kelly lacked the energy, the show lacked magic, connection, context, concept and direction. In the process, he sang short pieces of his repertoire. He also did not have a performance list of popular songs in Uganda, which made it difficult to please some people.”
The singer who has over ten albums to his name performed on playback. “His recorded vocals came on before he started lip synching. His stage ensembles were actors and did not play any instruments although they held them. We could hear snares in some songs but without the drummer touching them. The bass guitarist had one hand holding his back and the other hand in his pocket. I never saw him strum the guitar.”
Some of the stage goofs included the video managers mismatching titles of the songs R Kelly was performing, sometimes even using the intro words as the titles of given songs.
